Tattoo Aftercare Guide for Proper Healing

Getting a new tattoo is only half the journey. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals correctly, keeps its color and detail, and avoids infection.

At Evil Genius Tattoo in Kelowna, we provide every client with clear aftercare instructions tailored to the Okanagan climate, where dry air, strong sun, and lake activities can all affect how a tattoo heals.

This guide walks you through exactly how to care for your tattoo from the moment you leave the studio through the full healing process.

The First 24 Hours After Your Tattoo

The first day is the most important stage of healing. Your tattoo is essentially an open wound, so keeping it clean and protected is critical.

What to expect

It’s normal to experience:

• Redness
• Mild swelling
• Warmth in the skin
• Small amounts of plasma or ink leakage

These are normal parts of the healing process.

Initial bandage or wrap

Your tattoo artist will apply either:

• A standard protective bandage
• A medical adhesive film (often called Second Skin)

Follow the instructions provided by your artist for how long to keep it on.

Second Skin Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Many tattoos today are covered with a breathable medical adhesive bandage commonly known as Second Skin, Saniderm, or Derm Shield.

This bandage protects the tattoo while allowing the skin to begin healing underneath.

How Long to Leave Second Skin On

Most artists recommend leaving the bandage on for 48 hours unless otherwise instructed.

During this time you may notice:

• Fluid buildup under the bandage
• Ink mixing with plasma
• Slight wrinkling of the bandage

This is completely normal.

How to Remove Second Skin

When it's time to remove the bandage:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly

  2. Remove the bandage slowly under warm running water

  3. Peel it back parallel to the skin rather than pulling upward

  4. Wash the tattoo gently with fragrance-free soap

Once removed, continue with regular tattoo aftercare.

How to Keep Your New Tattoo Clean

Keeping your tattoo clean is important, but over-washing can dry out and irritate healing skin, especially in Kelowna’s dry Okanagan climate. Gentle rinsing and light moisturizing usually work best.

During showers

When showering:

  • Let lukewarm water run gently over the tattoo
  • Avoid scrubbing the area
  • Do not use washcloths or loofahs on the tattoo

After showering

  1. Allow the tattoo to rinse naturally with water

  2. Pat the area dry with a clean towel or air dry

  3. Apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer

Avoid rubbing the tattoo with bath towels.

Your tattoo should stay clean, lightly moisturized, and free from irritation. If the skin becomes overly dry or irritated, avoid washing and allow the skin to recover.

The Best Lotion or Cream for Tattoo Aftercare

It's important to apply a thin layer of moisturizer as needed throughout the day. The key is a thin layer. Too much moisture can suffocate the skin and slow healing. Your tattoo should feel hydrated, but not greasy.

Moisturizing Tips

  • Use fresh, organic, and uncompromised coconut oil or a fragrance-free lotion to help keep your tattoo moisturized
(Note: coconut oil applied to the skin should not have been cross-contaminated with anything prior to use, such as food)
  • Apply a thin layer multiple times daily as needed (in the morning when you wake up, after a shower, and before bed are optimal times)

Tattoo Healing Stages

Healing for your tattoo happens in several stages.

Days 1 to 3

Redness and tenderness are common. Your tattoo may feel warm and slightly swollen.

Days 4 to 14

Peeling and itching begin. The tattoo may resemble a mild sunburn as the top layer of skin sheds.

Do not scratch or pick at the tattoo.

Weeks 2 to 4

The surface appears healed but deeper layers of skin are still recovering.

Complete healing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.
